The school was established on 21 Dec1964 at Smt. Sindhutai Joshi's bungalow. The school first shifted to a plot in Karvenagar but due to unavailability of water for construction it had to be shifted to Ganeshkhind road.

The school had seven rooms then and was growing fast.In 1978 the school strength increased to 100 and the same year a teacher’s training program was granted by social welfare department of Maharashtra.In 1979 the school got two and half acres of land near Senapati Bapat road, Gokhale Nagar, Pune. Here, two separate buildings were built, one for the school and the other for sheltered workshop.

The school has 125 children and there are 110 adult students are in the workshop.The school has another branch in Nigadi with 110 children.Kamayani Vidyamandir has 3 buses of its own and a PMT bus is provided by Pune Municipal Corporation.Similarly the Pimpri Chinchwad Mahanagar Palika also has provided a bus service for the Nigdi school.

In the school not only academic but skills for daily living are also taught. The school celebrates all festivals and conducts many competitions in co-curricular activities. It also sends children to participate in various competitions.

Many respectable personalities have visited and blessed this institute.
The late Mother Teresa has blessed Kamayani in September 1986. Lata Mangeshkar and Bhakti Barve, a renowned Marathi actress, have also visited Kamayani in 1987.
